Mannequin Pussy Knoxville Concert reviews
Too much focus on showing off
I love Mannequin Pussy and admire their songwriting talent. Unfortunately, this show was a big disappointment. The concert involved flashy elements (lots of lights, weird unrelated video clips in the background, song snippets seemingly aimed at those with insufficient attention for entire songs), which took away from all of the aspects that make this band wonderful. The best parts of the show were Mat Kearney (not of Mannequin Pussy) and the one song the band played while standing together in regular lighting. The music was so loud that you could rarely hear Bear's wonderfully unique voice, let alone understand any of the words to the songs. These musicians are better than what their concert portrayed, and the important Christian message so inherent in most of their songs was completely lost among all of the over-the-top showmanship. I would love to see them take heed of the lyrics of one of their songs: "money and fame bring a man shame". They would be wise to strip away all of the extras intended to make this show "entertaining", because all it did was show off the money and fame they've gained, while diluting the message and musicianship this band possesses.
